Despite his exhaustion, Carl felt accomplished. His hard work had paid off with a promising deal. Now, sitting in the airport, he glanced at the clock, relieved that boarding was only ten minutes away.

After such a stressful journey, Carl had splurged on a business class ticket, hoping for some well-deserved comfort.

When the gate agent announced business class boarding, Carl eagerly stood up and walked to the front of the line. However, at the ticket counter, the agent delivered unwelcome news: “Sir, there’s a problem with your seat. The flight is overbooked, and we’ve run out of business class seats. We can only offer you an upgrade to economy.”

Carl’s jaw tightened, but he tried to stay calm. He imagined the spacious seats and attentive service he had missed out on. With a sigh, he reluctantly moved to the economy line, preparing for a cramped five-hour flight.

As he settled into his narrow seat, struggling to fit his bag into a full overhead bin and cutting his fingers in the process, he felt a sharp pain in his back. Turning around, he saw the young boy behind him kicking his seat repeatedly. The boy’s mother was absorbed in a magazine, ignoring her child’s disruptive behavior.

Carl tried to remain positive, closing his eyes to block out the discomfort. But the persistent kicks made it nearly impossible for him to relax. He turned to the boy and said, “Please stop kicking my seat. It’s a bit uncomfortable.” He aimed for a friendly tone.

The boy’s kicking continued unabated, and the mother barely looked up from her magazine. “Kids will be kids,” she said dismissively, “I’m trying to keep him entertained.”

Frustrated, Carl’s patience wore thin. The flight attendants intervened, but Carl chose to ignore the situation and focus on staying calm. Just as he began to unwind, another kick jolted him awake.

Determined to address the issue, Carl devised a plan. He requested a glass of water from the flight attendant. As the stewardess delivered the water, Carl feigned surprise when another kick hit his seat. He purposefully knocked over the glass, causing water to spill onto the boy’s mother.

The woman shrieked, dropping her magazine in shock. The boy, startled, apologized profusely, “I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to spill the water.”

The boy looked remorseful, his earlier mischief replaced with regret. The stewardess arrived with napkins, apologizing for the spill. “Are you okay?” she asked.

Before the woman could respond, Carl assured her, “It was an accident. I spilled the water myself.” He made sure the mother and son understood the situation.

The mother, now drying her clothes, avoided eye contact with Carl, while the boy remained quiet. For the rest of the flight, the seat behind Carl stayed still—no more kicks. The mother and son were silent throughout the journey. Carl, feeling a sense of satisfaction, relaxed and thought, “Next time, I’ll make sure to fly first class.”
